Mission Bay Loop Public Meeting - UPDATE

SFMTA Project Manager Peter Brown just wrote to clarify a few things regarding the T-line as it would appear south of the new turnaround, writing,
"Residents in the south will not lose a one-seat connection to Mission Bay/Downtown upon the completion of the loop. No transfers will be required in the northbound direction. For Central Subway trains heading south to Sunnydale, they should be marked as either “Mission Bay” or “Sunnydale” – this way patrons will be able to choose if they want to wait for a train on the platform where they board, or transfer at 18th Street for trips further south. Only some trains heading south will use the loop, no trains heading north will use it.

"The purpose of the loop is to increase service between Mission Bay and Chinatown once the Central Subway is completed. This will be accomplished through additional  "short-line" service from 19th/3rd (Mission Bay) to the Chinatown terminus (Stockton/Washington).

"This new service is intended to supplement, not replace, existing service to and from the Bayshore Terminus. In fact, additional service is being added for the long-line (Bayshore-Chinatown) as well upon Central Subway completion. Peak headways on the Bayshore-Chinatown line will drop to 7.5 minutes from 9 minutes currently, which means that residents who live south of Mission Bay will also receive more frequent transit service. Headways between Mission Bay and downtown will drop from 9 to 4 minutes. I am happy to schedule another meeting to explain the project to folks further south. The primary change for them is augmented service and we expect ridership and service frequency to grow both south and north of the loop. The reason I scheduled it in the Dogpatch is due to eminent 2014 construction and wanting to explain and hear concerns regarding that phase."

Please join SFMTA to discuss the Mission Bay Loop Transit Project.

In 2003, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) began Third Street T-Line service between Embarcadero and Sunnydale. Upon completion of the Central Subway, the Mission Bay Loop will allow for more frequent service between Mission Bay, SOMA and Chinatown by finishing the train turnaround at Third, 18th, 19th and Illinois Streets. Transit frequency south of Mission Bay will also be increased.

SFMTA is now completing the required federal Environmental Assessment. We are eager to hear your thoughts about the project and to update you on the proposed schedule, with construction anticipated for 2014.
