S.F.'s Bayview institutions reflect past, future

One neighborhood. Two institutions, both serving seniors, one representing the past, the other signaling the future. At the Bayview Hunters Point Adult Day Health Center, the mostly African American clientele talks about coming to San Francisco from the South, how the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard attracted many to the area, and the history of the neighborhood. The center, established in 1974, has a reputation as a caring place where seniors, many of them poor and some without families, come for companionship, activities, meals and medical care. Along with the other adult centers in the state, it was informed it would no longer receive state funding because of the budget crisis and would have to close its doors July 1. The centers have since won a reprieve until Sept. 1, and a lawsuit has been filed claiming the closures represent a violation of federal disability protections.

Rebuilding Together SF Now Accepting Applications!

Rebuilding Together San Francisco (RTSF) is currently accepting applications from both community facilities (nonprofits, community centers, schools, etc) and homeowners in need of repairs - application deadline is August 31st, 2011 for work done in April 2012.

RTSF has been mobilizing volunteers in San Francisco for over 20 years now, founded on a grass roots barn raising effort following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.

We focus on:

• Supporting seniors and adults with disabilities to age safely in their homes
• Brightening up and helping nonprofits, community centers and schools focus their budgets on programming needs rather than facility maintenance
• Through our Rebuilding Neighborhood work, we focus on a different neighborhood by working closely with local leaders, neighbors, and organizations to execute unique community based projects that support a resilient and vibrant neighborhood

And Rebuilding Together San Francisco is now accepting applications for our FREE repair programs, serving homes, nonprofit facilities and schools!

Each April during Rebuilding Day, we mobilize teams of volunteers to provide free repairs and renovation work for low-income homeowners, as well as community centers, nonprofits and schools. The type of work depends on what the client needs, but may include: interior painting, landscaping, general cleaning, light plumbing, electrical, carpentry, safety modifications, weather stripping, and replacing appliances. All the work is done by volunteers on the last Saturday of each April - so mark your calenders, next Rebuilding Day will be Saturday, April 28th, 2012!

Also, our year round program Home Safety & Independence provides safety modifications (garb bars, smoke detectors, etc), energy efficiency upgrades and minor repairs to both homeowners and tenants year round. See more about our programs here.
