I'm voting for Kristine Enea because she has tirelessly volunteered her time for the past five years, attending over 500 community meetings, to learn about how best to create smart development in the redevelopment districts of D10. As a legal negotiator, community activist, and creative thinker, she is extremely qualified to be supervisor. At city hall, she will not be beholden to ideology, but to the betterment of our district and our city. With most of her campaign funds raised from inside D10 and not from external forces that will demand something in return, she is the only candidate with the intelligence and independence to earn my vote.
You take away the candidates without the political sophistication to be an effective leader and representative of our district, without the community advocacy track record, without the uneasy residential status that smacks of political ambition (looking at you Steve Moss,), without the obvious shill-role for the downtown establishment ....well, you're left with Kristine. Smart, capable, authentic ...humanist AND practical. Every district needs someone like Enea to represent them. Luckily, she is ours.
There are two characteristics about Kristine that I respect in a "public servant." Education-wise, Kristine is exceptionally qualified to be in political office; however, I don't get a sense that she sees herself as a wonky elite, at all -- she's "everyman" (or woman). That has to be the one of the most refreshing aspects about her. She's among one of the most completely approachable candidates I've met, and, I feel, grass-roots oriented.
She's made a point of attending neighborhood meetings, because I've been to them and seen her participate and take notes. She's familiarized herself with each neighborhood and I feel she has, and will have, a well-grounded and positive approach to working in and managing what will soon become a controversial part of town.
I am torn between Kristine Enea and Tony Kelly. Will keep reading and make my decision - but these two seem to be WAY ahead of the rest in qualifications.
Kristine Enea is the best candidate for District 10 Supervisor
I've lived in District 10 (Bayview) for over 12 years now, and up until a few months ago, the ONLY candidate I ever saw at community meetings was Kristine Enea. Not only did Kristine attend the many meetings, but she actually commmitted to serving on boards and in leadership positions. I was further impressed by Kristine when, after we attended our first meeting of the Bayview Redevelopment PAC, of which she was a board member, she made a point of introducing herself after the meeting and asking us about ourselves, our feelings etc. Kristine is extremely intelligent, demonstrates wisdom in her stances, and welcomes dialogue with anyone who wishes to talk to her. She lives in the epicenter of future change for the district: Hunters Point. She's also savvy and deeply interested in the issues and concerns of fellow District 10 residents in other neighborhoods in the district. Kristine believes strongly that District 10 residents need strong representation on the Board of Supervisors if we are to get district development that is optimal and benefits us all. There are numerous candidates running in this election and most of the District 10 candidates are mediocre at best. Some would be a disaster as our supervisor. Lynette Sweet is a crony of Willie Brown, who did nothing for D10 except expect our blanket vote for him. Sweet is already in the pocket of rich Republican land developers and other downtown interests, getting huge contributions and below-cost office space. She has demonstrated an appalling ignorance of D10 issues, and when she was a bank exec., doled grant money out to her cronies rather than having nonprofits apply for it. She has also stated that she wants to make Willie Brown mayor again and rename 3rd Street after him. Yikes! Malia Cohen likes to raise her voice at symposia as if she were preaching to the congregation, but she demonstrates a disturbing lack of knowledge about D10 issues, and when pressed for her platform, makes ambiguous comments or says she will further Kristine Enea's work. Another endorsement of Kristine! Steve Moss has also been feeding at the trough of downtown interests, has raised eyebrows about his use of grant funds, and only moved into D10 from D8 because he thought he could get elected here. When he first started coming to meetings, he knew almost nothing about D10 issues, and his grasp is still shaky. Several other candidates are also carpetbaggers—Smith and Jackson. Kelly may have a following among the theater crowd in Potrero Hill, but he's woefully unprepared to represent the whole district, or to deal with the major issues. DeWitt Lacely is a civil rights lawyer, bright, but not really up to par on D10 issues. Like Sweet, he appears to be more likely to serve his cronies rather than D10. Marlene Tran is the only candidate that really measures up as a prospect, and Asians are the largest group in District 10, but she wouldn't have as good a grasp of ALL the issues as Kristine. It all boils down to Kristine being the best candidate for D10—by far. She would represent ALL District 10 residents: Asians, African Americans, Latinos, LGBT folks—everyone in ALL of the neighborhoods. Kristine IS one of us, and has been championing D10 causes for years. Please, PLEASE!! do us all a favor and vote for Kristine Enea for District 10 Supervisor.
Kristine is the only candidate I have seen walking the streets of D10 visiting business owners, talking to the residents, enjoying community events and spending her money where she lives. Most candidates don't even know what businesses exist in D10 and have little knowledge of the challenging and perplexing issues. Kristine has taken the time to attend meetings, joined boards and made a real effort to learn the issues of D10 and the feelings of the people who live here. A vote for Kristine would mean a D10 Supervisor who is approachable and one who can make their own decisions, take a stand and stand on it! We need NO more carbon copies or mouthpieces, the stakes are to high. kristine's knowledge and skills will help D10 through an aggressive, changing and exciting time.
If you've met the candidates, you'd already be a Kristine Enea supporter. Get to know her, and you'll know you'll be getting a well informed, well prepared, intelligent supervisor. She's shown dedication to our neighborhood for years, attending not only meetings where she was on the committees but also meetings in support of other community groups. She's the one I've been going to when I wanted to understand the difference between redevelopment, the superfund, the cac, the rab and the pac. I suspect she's the only one running who could explain that. It's part brains and part sweat. She's done her homework and her volunteering in the community. She knows the players, has their respect, and can bridge any differences. She listens and understands she's representing Potrero, Bayview, Visatation Valley and more.
One thing that I personally hope voters keep in mind is that a candidate who only says that they'll do what the voters want them to do isn't a leader - they're someone who either doesn't have ideas, doesn't want to stand behind potentially unpopular ideas, or who is going to be beholden to the 'voter' with the biggest check or backroom influence. A comment on one of the news sources that I read today that made me sit up was in regard to candidates who say they've lived in the district all their lives, and how that is the reason that we should vote for them. Why does that, above knowledge of how to acquire park space from private developers, or knowledge about how to write legislation, or knowing whom to call when you inevitably need a favor or an expert to help a constituent, count as a credential. I'd rather have someone who's only been living in the district five years, has been involved and learning about our district's issues and has been there fixing them from Day 1. Sometimes it takes a fresh look at a problem to see the creative solution that everyone else has missed. This is why I support Kristine Enea.
I'm voting for Kristine because she's: - Thoughtful and smart on key issues. She spends the time to thoroughly evaluate the issues from all angles before taking a position. I appreciate this even when we don't agree on the same things. - The only candidate who has really been engaged in community and land use discussions in D10. And she has been doing this for years. I completely object to candidates who move into D10 just to run for election. For those who have only lived in D10 for the past 2 years (or less), what do they know about our District? They haven't lived here or paid attention to us long enough to have done enough to make a difference in our communities. - Doesn't embarrass D10 with stories of tax and income reporting problems. - The one whom other candidates talk about with great respect and take ideas from. I have overheard and have had personal conversations with several current supervisors and candidates across the political spectrum who have said great things and have heard great things about Kristine from a lot of people. Her sterling reputation is not just local, but citywide.
Kristine Enea for Supervisor. I served for two years on the BVHP PAC with Kristine Enea and strongly support her for D10 Supervisor. She is the only candidate who has put in the time to earn our vote. Most of the other candidates I have never seen at a community meeting in the last five years. Kristine has the qualities we need in a Supervisor. As a fierce negotiator she will bring the most community benefits to D10. She'll protect Potrero's Land Use & quality of life issues, she lives at the epicenter of all future development in D10 and she's a friend to Vis Valley.
Malia Cohen is the Sarah Palin of the District 10 Supervisor's race. It's Land Use Policy, Malia, not Land Use Molicy.
Steve Moss appears to be the Ed Jew of the District 10 Supervisor's race, with his D10 residency issues. I've lived near the corner of 3rd & Palou the last 8 years and I'm not even running. Steve's renting here as of a few months ago, barely in Potrero, let alone Bayview. Too condescending.
Lynette Sweet is the Rod Blagojevich of the District 10 Supervisor's race. Each week she has a new legal problem (See: Buck Stops Here, Matier & Ross).
Jackson, Lacy and Smith are good people, but Smith just moved to D10 just a few months ago to run. Great guys, but not ready for the prime time the way that Enea is.
We need a candidate from D10, and that's Kristine Enea.
I have to admit being a little disappointed that Kristine has not called or questioned other candidates, especially Moss and his terrible track record.
I'm supporting Kristine Enea because she is truly a community/grassroots/advocate for equality and justice. When you call upon her she shows up with compassion, an open mind and belief that all concerned citizen needs are real--she's attentive, smart, and no push-around. As an attorney, she knows and abides by the law. As Secretary and 5-year member of the Bayview Project Area Committee (PAC), she's knows the issues of D10; understands land use and smart development--and more importantly puts community first! Integrity is one of the greatest attributes any candidate can possess and Kristine has exhibited this quality in all that she does. Vote for Kristine and you'll be assured that your Supervisor is working with you and on behalf of you!
District 10 residents will witness significant pressures on population growth and land-use options in the coming decades. There are very few accomplished, dedicated, intellectually and emotionally mature local community leaders who have, for years, advocated for smart development, safe neighborhoods, healthy families, strong schools, support for local employment and who have earned respect from a diversity of our residents in Bayview, Potrero Hill and Visitacion Valley. In Bayview, one verifiable resident homeowner, an honest, dedicated and smart community volunteer who heads a couple of neighborhood organizations, who also knows business and reads the fine print, has emerged as easily the most qualified and least controversial in this election cycle. Her name is Kristine Enea, and she is running for Supervisor in District 10. Drawing on her experiences as a lawyer, writer, filmmaker and community leader, Kristine has formed a plan to lead this district and to represent our D10 neighborhoods from a wider perspective. She is dedicated to building relationships that facilitate open and consistent 'citizen to supervisor' communication throughout D10. Kristine has the ‘institutional memory’ of the decades long planning and development process, a familiarity and working relationship with various stakeholders within our neighborhoods, and can be relied upon to modulate the disparate and valued hopes and desires for our future. Kristine is a leader who will run interference on those who chose to ‘divide and conquer’, whether that behavior is exhibited as an unfortunate by-product of uncoordinated City Agencies (Redevelopment, Planning, Transportation) or by outside development entities who play by their own rules. Such leadership has been absent in our district for the last decade. From my personal questioning of her goals and vision for the district, I know that Kristine has a deeper understanding of the five most obvious and important issues: Crime and Public Safety; Health, Environment and Social Services; Land Use Planning and Housing; Education, Economic Development and Jobs; Transportation, Muni, Traffic.
Yet, there are FIVE additional issues, which have rarely been discussed during any of the recent forums but are high on the priority list for Kristine Enea:
1. Re-Districting in D10 and the 2012 repeat of moved initiated in 2002. Kristine Enea has pledged to retain the relationships and district connections among the Potrero, Bayview and Visitacion Valley communities.
2. Tax Increment Financing, the Redevelopment Areas and Audits of the Redevelopment Agency.
3. The Sewer Plant – move it, reduce it, expand it? Or ignore it?
4. M1 / PDR districts and the great pressure on building new affordable housing in D10. Will the remainder of SF play in this sandbox?
5. The Non-Profit allocation question in D10. Are the organizations receiving real money actually delivering significant services?
Please add your top five priorities to these lists and vet the candidates. What we have heard throughout the district over the past number of months is a sobering reaction to the promotion of candidates with no community experience in this election cycle for District 10. Kristine Enea, on the other hand, has the community history, the relationships, temperament and independence to serve us. I believe that she will bring a fresh and pragmatic perspective to getting things done. I am supporting Kristine Enea for District 10 Supervisor and urge you to meet with her and to support her campaign for representing our communities.
Thank you for your consideration,
Dan Dodt San Francisco
for the record: like many in Bayview, i've also attended perhaps thousands of community meetings while living in the district; I understand Kristine's dedication.
I was wavering but have decided on Kristine Enea for the following reasons.
1. Tireless, reliable volunteer. She is willing to put her time where her mouth is - and that takes dedication and love.
2. She is a long time resident (and not in the tony part of town)!
3. She is an attorney. With the upcoming development I believe solid skills are needed to interpret the piles of legal tomes that will be coming her way!
After some careful consideration, I'll be voting for Kristine Enea. Obviousily, the field is packed with numerous candidates - some of whom who have been involved with the local political scene for years.... and who are well known in District 10.
During the past six months or so, Kristine has continuously struck me as a person of integrity, drive, compassion and yet, has all the smarts to be highly effective in this highly contentious, and unfortunately, at times corrupt arena of city politics.
Undoubtably, District 10 represents a significant element of the 21st century San Francisco. How this plays out - negotiating the competing issues of economic growth, diversity, development, environmental priorities, community well-being, and educational priorities - in part, depends on the experience, intelligence and principled nature of our local leadership. It will be incumbent upon them to chart a stable and honest course, reconcile these differences and work with us all to arrive at decisions that will form who we all hope to become.
I believe Kristine is the person for that position.
