Proposals for a new Public Artwork At Pier 92

The Port of San Francisco has retained the Arts Commission to assist in the commissioning of a public artwork to be located at Pier 92, near the intersection of Illinois Street and Cargo Way, along San Francisco’s southern waterfront. The site is primarily an industrial area with shipping cranes and two large grain silos that have not been in use since the 1970s. While the majority of traffic along Cargo Way is industrial, the Blue Greenway project will create open spaces along the waterfront that will attract a diversity of activities for Bay Area residents and visitors to the City.
Four artists/ artist teams have been selected as finalists to propose a public artwork for this site that serves as an entrance to the Bayview community: Ball-Nogues Studio; Electroland;Haddad/Drugan; and Rigo 23.

The selected artwork will be a long-term temporary installation, expected to be in a place for a minimum of 5 years. The artwork will be reversible in that it may be painted over or removed.
OVERVIEW OF SELECTION PROCESS
Following an open call for artists, the Arts Commission convened an artist selection panel in August 2012 consisting of: an Arts Commissioner; a Port Commissioner; three arts professionals; a community representative; and the Deputy Director of Planning & Development, Port of San Francisco.  The call was open to professional, practicing artists residing within the Western States. The Arts Commission received 135 applications, which were screened for minimum qualifications. Staff presented the pool of qualified applicants to the selection panel, who reviewed and scored the artists’ applications. Through this process the panel identified a shortlist of finalists who were invited to produce artwork proposals for the Pier 92 grain silos. The short list includes the following artists and artist teams: Ball-Nogues Studio; Electroland; Haddad/Drugan; and Rigo 23.
Each of the artists and artist teams spent approximately six weeks developing their proposals, which are on view from January 7-21, 2013 at the Bayview Opera House and on the Arts Commission website for public comment. Public comments will be summarized and shared with the Artist Selection Panel prior to the final panel meeting.
At the final selection panel meeting, the panelists will interview each of the four finalists, discuss their proposals, and then decide which artist/proposal to recommend to the Arts Commission for final approval.
The final selection panel meeting will take place on January 25, 2013, 1:00 – 5:00 pm, 25 Van Ness Avenue, Suite 70 (basement level), San Francisco, CA 94102. All artist selection panel meetings are open to the public. Please visit the Arts Commission website for any updates to the meeting schedule at: http://www.sfartscommission.org/pubartcollection/ under the Meeting and Events section.
