Art springs up in Bayview

Artist Malik Seneferu puts the finishing touches on his latest work, located at Oakdale Ave at 4800 Third St.

Art Project Unveiling in Bayview

On April 14, 2012 San Francisco Housing Development Corporation (SFHDC), 4800 Third Street Homeowners Association, and the 94124 Arts Program will proudly unveil a new public art installation From the Hill and Beyond by artist Malik Seneferu. As the developer of the mixed use building at 4800 Third Street, SFHDC has been a long advocate for revitalization and improvement in southeast San Francisco, especially Bayview’s Third Street commercial corridor. Those development efforts have lead SFHDC to not only construct buildings but promote and engage in public space improvements with the goal of bringing neighbors back to Third Street to shop, dine, and be entertained especially in Bayview’s Town Center area.

There are approximately 29 MUNI communication boxes on Third Street from Evans Ave to Wallace Avenue. SFHDC along with 4800 Third Street Homeowners Association partnered with local arts the 94124 Arts Program to solicit proposals from local artists for the project. The goal is to mitigate issues of public dumping and nuisance that have occurred around the communication box. Malik Seneferu’s work was chosen for this mural location. This bustling corner is home to 18 new condominiums and the recently opened restaurant, Radio Africa and Kitchen. SFHDC, the 4800 Third Street Homeowners Association, and Art94124 hope that this is the first of several MUNI communication boxes to get murals in the Bayview neighborhood.

This project is funded by the San Francisco Housing Development Corporation (SFHDC) and 4800 Third Street Homeowners Association. SFHDC and the 94124 Arts Program are actively seeing funding to bring more art to Bayview’s Third Street.

ART94124 Oakdale & Third Beautification Project

With last month's Board of Supervisors vote to approve the installation of 726 new AT&T U-Verse boxes around the city, projects like this one from ART94124 NEED to be considered as vital to keep our cities free of as much blight as possible.  Each utility box art project would act as a way to bring neighbors together in choosing a design, it would give artists in the city a public canvas to display their work, and would help increase quality of life in our neighborhoods by discouraging urination on these boxes.  Of course, AT&T's new boxes are made of graffiti-resistant plastic, so there'd have to be some tweaking there to make this work, but work it could.  Sign up at AT&T's site so that you'll be informed as to when a box is being put into your neighborhood.

Scope of Work: ART94124 is requesting artists to submit a proposal to beautify the communication and electric service boxes that sit one the sidewalk at the corner of Oakdale and Third Street. This site has attracted unwanted attention and we hope by making the boxes visually appealing this will deter unseemly behavior.

Problem: need to deter public urination on sidewalk at the corner of Oakdale and Third Street.

There has been a longstanding issue of people urinating at the electric box on Oakdale Ave. Please click on the links below to see what others have done to deters this. One idea is to use the box as canvas for an art piece. It could even be something to promote the restaurant that is coming soon to this location.

Deemed "Too Serious", Ritual Coffee Bans Artists' Work

That's one SERIOUS cabinet!

There's a storm brewing, with Ritual Roasters owner Eileen Hassi at its eye. The article that is creating all the caffeine-buzz first landed on SFist.

Although this is all happening at the Valencia St Ritual Roasters shop, I mention it here for a couple of reasons. First, photographer Varese Layzer is a member of SF Camerawork, a gallery space that is supporting the opening of a show tomorrow at the Bayview Opera House (read more about it here). Second, the owner of Ritual Roasters operates a store inside the Flora Grubb nursery on Jerrold St, and so policies regarding artist-relations and content at one location can logically be assumed to apply to another. Third, our neighborhood is home to Hunters Point Shipyard Artists, one of the last remaining artist communities in the city, and so relations between that community and local businesses are important.

I for one do not want "tapestries of heavy metal lyrics" and other, "fluffier stuff" to be the only art that I see when I go into a local coffee shop that has gallery space. I want to see it all - stuff that makes me smile, wince, wonder.  I especially want art that makes me think.  I really like to see our privately owned spaces providing wall space to artists who may otherwise not have a venue to display their works, and hope we don't only get to see the fluffy stuff, needing instead to step through the doors of SFMOMA to get anything thought-provoking.  Thank goodness we have spaces like ART94124 and Javalencia to display pieces we may otherwise not get to if we only were to go into Ritual.

Live Mural Painting on Fairfax this Friday!

This Friday ART 94124 is hosting a fun event that will feature live mural painting. In the spirit of building community through ART, ART 94124 is excited to sponsor a new mural on Fairfax Street at Third St, adjacent to ART 94124 GALLERY, in partnership with La Laguna Taqueria. The mural will be painted by On Point artists Marlon Sagana Ingram, Jose Aponte, and other guest artists.

Join us this Friday for the kick-off of the mural's creation. Sip on some hot cider, gather 'round the grill to toast up a marshmallow (or 4), while enjoying some drumming by local musician Larry Williams and watching local artists work on creating the first mural on Fairfax! Also, take a a peek in the gallery at the current exhibit On Point: Art + Graffiti, an original exhibit of art, graffiti, and installation work by eight artists from Bayview and Hunters Point, that includes work by the muralists.
