Newcomb Model Block Streetscape Project Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

You are cordially invited to join Mayor Edwin M. Lee, District 10 Supervisor Malia Cohen, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Public Works and the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency to celebrate the completion of the Newcomb Model Block Streetscape Improvement Project.

This project has transformed Newcomb Avenue into one of the most sustainable and green streets in San Francisco with a repeating series of green areas for community use, storm water management and neighborhood beautification. Permeable pavers, traffic calming, raised pedestrian crossings, new street trees and hundreds of new plants will all come together to renew a street that residents and San Franciscans can be truly proud of.

The improvements are part of DPW’s Great Streets Program, which aims to improve the safety and sustainability of the city’s corridors and maximize the use of public space.

The Model Block Program is a San Francisco Redevelopment Agency initiative for the Bayview Hunters Point Redevelopment Project Area that aims to build community and neighborhood stewardship through private and public realm enhancements.

Ed Lee: Campaign Announcement Coming Next Week

The Bay Citizen writes, "Interim mayor says he's not afraid of 'all the politics' the city has." I suspect that's because he knows his way around 'all the politics' already. Just ask all the supervisors who voted him back in January how they were told he'd only be interim mayor.

Don't get me wrong, I think he seems like a very in-touch kind of guy who's generally doing a better job than someone else might have done, especially given the city's economy, recent police incidents in the Bayview, and such.  I just don't like it when people who appear to be doing good are actually heavily backed by people who may or may not be in it for more than their own interests.

Mayoral Question Time, Round The Second, Expected Tuesday

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee will return to the Board of Supervisors' chambers on Tuesday for his second voter-mandated monthly mayoral appearance.


The appearances are required after nearly 60 percent of city voters passed Proposition C in November in response to often contentious relations between the former board and then-Mayor Gavin Newsom.
But Newsom was elected the state's lieutenant governor in the same election, and Lee was chosen as interim mayor.

According to the rules set up by the board, Lee made his first appearance last month and answered questions submitted the previous week by supervisors in odd-numbered districts.
Some supervisors had argued for more spontaneity to be allowed in the proceedings; Lee's appearance was anything but.

He read scripted answers to questions on topics such as the city's budget and pension reform, and joked to reporters afterward that he would try to be more compelling the next time.

District 10 Supervisor Malia Cohen asked what the city is doing to clean up and reuse the site left vacant by the Potrero Power Plant, which ceased operations earlier this year.

Mayor Lee Announces Implementation Plan for Local Hire Policy

The local hire ordinance has been a significant issue to workers, represented in demonstrations and negotions by Aboriginal Blacks United (ABU), who feel shut out of the Dogpatch construction of the new UCSF hospital at 16th and 3rd Sts. While UCSF has said it would do its best to hire locally, it is not required to under the local-hire law because it is a state project. Today's announcement by Mayor Lee that he is seeking to impose the local-hire ordinance on federally-funded transportation projects could potentially extend to the UCSF hospital project.

The Bay Citizen reports,

Two weeks before a new law takes effect requiring San Francisco construction contractors to hire local workers, city officials will ask the federal government to allow it to impose local-hiring rules on federally funded transportation projects.
