The Potrero Hill Archives Project and UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay invite you to the 12th annual Potrero Hill History Night this Saturday, October 22, at the International Studies Academy, 665 De Haro St. at 18th St.

Interviews with long-time Hill residents are the focus: Pioneer rock critic Joel Selvin; Country Joe McDonald; and Josephine Firpo Alioto are on this year’s program.

October Lecture: From Downtown to Dogpatch + a 1970s Bash!

Join Board member and former Heritage staffer Chris VerPlanck for our November lecture on Heritage’s 40-year history as San Francisco’s leading historic preservation nonprofit. From Downtown to Dogpatch will be held on Thursday, October 13 at 6 p.m. at the San Francisco Art Institute, 2007 Franklin Street San Francisco, CA 94109. VerPlanck’s retrospective will include the victories and losses that have shaped the organization and the city’s preservation movement. Lecture tickets are $8 for members and $12 for non-members. The ticket price includes a 1970s-themed reception and birthday party celebrating Heritage’s 40th anniversary after the lecture. We hope you’ll join us for light refreshments and a toast to Heritage. We’ll be going back to the organization’s start in 1971, so come dressed in your best ’70s duds! There is no charge for the reception (free with lecture ticket), but reservations are required; email info@sfheritage.org.

When engineers working near Candlestick Park last March drilled deep into the ground for soil samples, they pulled up chunks of wood and figured it was an old pier.

They had no idea it was a century-old ship, let alone two.

But that became clear this week when the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission uncovered what maritime experts believe are a pair of scow schooners, 90-foot-long workhorse vessels that plied the bay shallows in the late 1800s to deliver hay, salt, bricks, pork, coal, lumber and other cargo. Buried under more than 14 feet of sand and fill dirt, the 45-foot-long hull sections came to light at the mouth of an enormous trench that will house a new overflow sewage pipe for the Visitacion Valley neighborhood.
