First-of-the-Season Supervisor Candidate Debate in District 10

Potrero Hill Democratic Club will host a debate among candidates for District 10 Supervisor on Wednesday, July 2nd at 7:30pm sharp in Potrero Hill. Moderator will be Marisa Lagos, politics reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle. All five official candidates on the November 4th ballot are scheduled to appear:

The debate will take place in the beautiful theater at historic Julia Morgan-designed Potrero Hill Neighborhood House. Refreshments will be served, and the event is free and open to the public. PHDC resident members in good standing will vote that night on the Club’s endorsement for Supervisor, using ranked-choice ballots which will be counted at the end of the evening. A candidate has to garner 60% of votes cast to earn endorsement.

Redistricting Task Force Community Outreach Meetings

The 2010 Census reflects a recorded population increase in San Francisco.

Because the population growth was uneven across the City's supervisorial districts, this has determined that the supervisorial district lines be redrawn based upon the City Charter. The Board of Supervisors convened the Redistricting Task Force to carry out the required redistricting with members appointed by the Elections Commission, the Board of Supervisors, and the Mayor. The Task Force has the responsibility of redrawing supervisorial district boundaries by April 15, 2012. The Task Force will conduct a series of community outreach meetings to allow for public input.

Supervisor Cohen wants motive spelled out at S.F.'s antiabortion clinics

San Francisco would be the first city in California to require that crisis pregnancy centers prominently disclose whether they are antiabortion facilities that don't offer comprehensive health care, under legislation being developed by a city supervisor.

Critics say that despite giving the impression that women facing unplanned pregnancies are offered a full range of medical services and counseling, many of these clinics try to talk patients out of terminating their pregnancies and do not provide any care or referrals beyond limited prenatal and postnatal services.

"Legislation is a priority because there are clinics using misleading advertising tactics," said Supervisor Malia Cohen, the measure's author. "Women need and deserve to know the whole truth about their health care options."

San Francisco supervisor districts poised to change now that census data is released

With new census data come new population counts. And with new population counts comes redistricting. And with redistricting comes politics.

Let the line-drawing begin.

City elections chief John Arntz informed supervisors this week that he’ll be looking at population changes within their districts.

The City’s charter now gives him 60 days to decide whether populations have changed substantially. If they have, the board convenes a committee to redraw districts for the 2012 elections.

Observers are already eyeing the process, and considering how it could change The City’s balance of power.
