On August 26th at 10:00 PM, Plainclothes Bayview Officers were patrolling in the area of Missouri and Watchman Way when they saw a large group of known “Zoo Block” gang members loitering in front of a building in the area. As the officers approached, the group broke up, with two walking away towards Watchman Way and the other five walking north on Missouri. The officers decided to detain the larger group.
As all of the subjects were known to the officers as active gang members (including the two that walked in a different direction), the officers conducted pat down searches for weapons and searched the immediate area where the group was loitering for weapons. They found a loaded .9MM semi automatic handgun hidden between a tarp and a small motorized four wheel bike outside of the building. Along with the gun, they located a bag of ammunition. Since it could not be immediately determined which suspect the firearm belonged to, all were interviewed and released pending further investigation. (SFPD Case No. 110686388)

On August 26th at 5:20 AM, a suspect broke into a business in the area of Galvez and Phelps by prying open the skylight and jumping from the roof onto the top of a car inside the warehouse. The owner of the building responded to the scene and told Officers that he has the surveillance system hooked up with his computer at home and was able to watch the suspect inside the premise as soon as he tripped the alarm. The suspect was seen wandering around the interior of the garage, but apparently could not find anything that he could take up with him through the skylight, so he left. This incident is under investigation. (SFPD Case No. 110684069)

On August 26th at 7:30 PM, Officers observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed, well past the 30 MPH posted limit in the area of Caesar Chavez and Connecticut Sts. They conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle and in identifying the driver, learned that he was on active felony probation out of San Mateo County that included a search condition of his person, home, and car. The Officers exercised the search. Under the driver’s seat, they located a prescription bottle of hydrocodone that was not prescribed to the suspect. Hydrocodone is a controlled substance and possession without a prescription is a felony. The suspect was arrested and booked at Bayview Station. (SFPD Case No. 110686190)

As back up arrived to secure the rear of the building, the Officers heard the sound of metal falling from inside the building. Just as they were about to go in, the suspect emerged out of the rear door pushing a large blue recycling bin. He was taken into custody without incident. Inside the bin was a load of stolen power tools, cell phones, and chargers that the suspect had removed from inside the establishment.
The owner of the business arrived and confirmed that the premise was secure when he left and that all of the items in the recycling bin that the suspect was rolling out into the street belonged to the business. **************** Recap of prior gun seizures for this month:
On August 12th at 12:20 PM, while Bayview Housing Officers were on patrol in the area of Matthew Ct., they heard gunfire that sounded like it was coming from the area of George Ct. The officers searched and narrowed the location of occurrence to the 1100 block of Oakdale. Officers were met by a witness who told them that the gunfire had come from the cement path behind homes in the area. The officers did a thorough search of the area and located casings on the ground. Often times, guns are concealed in areas that are easy to get to by a suspect should he/she need it later on. For this reason, the officers checked the foliage in the area and were not surprised to find a .40 caliber semi auto within the ivy that clung to the wall of the building. There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident. The gun was seized by police for investigation. (SFPD Case No. 110644596)

On August 12th at 6:50 PM, Officers responded to the 2800 block of Ingalls in response to a shooting. They located a liquor store with blood in the entrance way but no victim. The store owner stated that he heard the door chime and looked up to see a male victim sitting in his door way. The victim stated that he had been shot in the foot. At this time, a male approached and helped him up. They both left the area. The 18 year old male victim was later located at SFGH Emergency in stable condition with a gunshot would to his foot.
The officers on scene observed a suspect leaving the intersection of Ingalls and Fitzgerald. They saw the suspect who was at first walking, begin to run away. The Officers quickly detained him. In retracing their steps, they found a sawed off shotgun in front of a home on the 2900 block of Ingalls. The suspect was immediately transported for a gun shot residue test. The results are pending. Both scenes were secured and all evidence was collected. This incident is being investigated by the Gang Task Force. (SFPD Case No. 110650101)

On August 19th at 2:30, Plainclothes officers were in the area of Oakdale and Griffith Streets,
patrolling the area that is known as the “turf” of the “Oakdale Mob” and “Surf Squad” gangs. They were walking through the cuts (areas/walkways between the housing buildings) when they spotted at known gang member walking with his brother. One of the Officers stood at the side of a building and waited for their approach, as they had not seen him yet.
As the pair rounded the corner, the Officer identified himself and asked to speak with the suspect. The suspect became visibly startled and rigid. When the Officer asked to speak with him, the suspect turned and ran. The foot chase went toward Palou Ave, where the suspect was seen pulling a silver handgun from his waistband by the Officer. As the suspect approached the corner of Crisp, he tossed the gun over a fence and continued to run. The suspect was finally overtaken and arrested at Quesada and Hawes by additional units.
The firearm, a 9 mm semi automatic, was recovered from the backyard into which it was thrown. The suspect was booked on multiple weapons charges along with a gang enhancement. (SFPD Case No. 110665558)

On August 21st at 9:20 PM, Plainclothes Officers were patrolling in the area of 3rd and LaSalle
when they observed a group loitering at the corner. Suddenly, as the Officers presence became apparent, one of the subjects broke away from the group and walked off. He was walking with a slight rigid limp and was not swinging his right arm, which is a motion consistent with a person trying to conceal something on their person. Along with the fact that suspects generally break away from people who they are hanging out with when the police arrive because they often have contraband, made the Officers suspicious. They followed him as he ducked into the doorway of a liquor store, but never went inside. They detained him and saw him become visibly distraught. When one of the Officers conducted a pat search on the suspect and felt the cold steel of a gun in his waistband, the suspect attempted to struggle and get away. He was not successful and was placed under arrest. The gun, a .22 caliber revolver, was also taken into custody for investigation into any possible involvement in any crime. The suspect was booked on numerous weapons related charges. (SFPD Case No. 110672111)

On August 23rd at 3:17, Plainclothes Officers were in the area of Garlington and Commer
Court. They saw five subjects who they recognized from numerous previous incidents as gang members. On of the subjects, on seeing the officers, grabbed his waist and turned his back quickly, disappearing into the building they were standing in front of.
The building contained a computer lab and the Officers were able to see him moving around throughout the room through the blinds. One of the Officers went into the building while the other stayed outside with the subjects who remained in the doorway. As soon as the Officer entered the computer room, the suspect inside walked past him and out the door. The officer looked around the room and spotted a black semi automatic .9mm pistol sitting between some papers on a file cabinet. He also saw an iPhone sitting on a desk near the gun. There was nobody in the computer lab and the officer confirmed with the receptionist that no one but the suspect had been in the room for a while.
Unfortunately, by this time the suspect had fled the scene. The officers were determined to identify him and secured video footage of him entering the facility. The security officer that provided the surveillance footage to the Officers recognized the suspect and provided his full name and address. This incident is still under investigation.
