Foghorn Bayview

From Tablehopper,
Bayview continues to percolate with new projects, and come this winter, ~FOGHORN BAYVIEW~ will be sounding its horn. The project is from Eric Nyeste (Proof Grainworks), who some may recognize from the Bayview Underground Food Scene, and his friend and architect, Josh Wallace (Mock/Wallace Architects).
The duo envision a neighborhood place that is going to offer breakfast and lunch, one that is primarily “high-quality Southern” in feel.
Read more at Tablehopper and check out Foghorn Bayview's Facebook page for updates on their new space at 4608 Third St.

Long Bridge Pizza opens in Dogpatch

From the SF Examiner,
Pizza is pizza. Don’t overthink it.
This seems to be the philosophy at Long Bridge Pizza Co. in the Dogpatch, and it works. Pizza is pretty much all that’s served in this modern, linear space (along with some wine and beer, now that their license is happily in effect), and that dedication to a single thing shows in their carefully crafted pies. The menu here isn’t cluttered with dreary pastas or lackluster chicken wings. It’s focused on the one thing that matters: pizza.

Bayview Underground Food Scene

From the Bay Area Reporter,
Earl Shaddix
Initially you may think you've lost your way. East of Third Street in Dogpatch, 22nd Street seems to end, then curls down a slope toward a series of seemingly derelict corrugated steel buildings. As you approach, you hear live music booming through the vacuous space. Welcome to Pier 70, a vestige of San Francisco's ship-building past. Here, every Thursday, the Bayview Underground Food Scene holds its weekly Community Pop-Up Market, a grassroots oasis in one of the city's food deserts.

Radio Africa & Kitchen owner's long path to Bayview

From SFGate,
The story of Eskender Aseged, chef/owner of Radio Africa & Kitchen in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood, is a classic immigrant's story. It shows how total dedication and perseverance - along with talent, of course - enabled him to reach his goal of opening his own restaurant.

San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley to get first grocery store in decades

From KALW,
Almost 30 million Americans live a mile or more away from a supermarket. That may not sound very far, but for the five million plus who don’t have cars, that distance can mean the difference between eating a healthy meal and getting fast food.
That’s how it is for residents of San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley neighborhood. But change is on the way. The district is slated to get its first supermarket in three decades.

Dinner at CDXX

BBQ Ribs @CDXX
Last night was our weekly dinner with friends, and we decided instead of doing delivery at home that we would head down to CDXX at 5800 Third St.

The menu isn't huge, but for a new restaurant that's completely understandable. On the menu last night were BBQ ribs with a side of mixed veggies and homemade fries and either seared mahi-mahi or seared tofu in a pineapple sauce with a side of mixed veggies and rice.

The food was delicious and for $10/dish, we felt the entire meal was awesome.

Mahi-mahi @CDXX
For dessert, we got one of their apple caramel pastries. While the flavors were really good, the pastry itself was a little chewy and I'm not sure we saw many apples in it.

All in all, a good start to this week-old effort. It was good to see a few other diners in there as well.  The waitress mentioned that people living in the condos above had been extremely supportive if them, too.

We felt like this was a place that we could go to once or twice a month, so hopefully they stick around a while.

5800 Third St @Carroll
Open 6AM - 8PM
Serving morning coffee and breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Dinner items can be taken 'to go' too.

Bayview Underground Food Scene

Bayview Underground Food Scene

The Bayview PopUp Market continues to grow and happens every Thursday from 5:00 - 7:30 at the Market on Third at 4634 Third St.

Now, Feve Artisan Chocolates has joined the fun. They are bringing in truffles, and smaller boxes of their artisan chocolate for sale.

Also, we have been super lucky to score a CSA box, that will charge on a sliding scale from $10-20 dollars.  Filled with fresh organic produce and fruits from Greenhearts Family Farm.

Our Market continues to grow, and we really like to see more people take advantage of this while it lasts.

Feve Artisan Chocolatier in the Bayview

Yum!!  From Tasting Table,
There is a lot to geek out about in the Bayview kitchen of Feve Artisan Chocolatier. An enrobing machine to cover truffles or candied ginger in chocolate. A panning machine that looks like a cement mixer but smells like cacao. A ventilation booth for airbrushing confectionary.
Feve's owner, Shawn Williams, worked under the nationally known Ewald Notter before starting Au Coeur des Chocolats, and then flew under the radar for five years. Last year, new investors and a Kiva loan helped him rebrand and invest in equipment and packaging.
Now Feve's sleek black boxes are appearing in stores such as Faletti Foods and Bryan's, and he's opening his studio for retail sales on Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m.

Fresh & Easy SOLD!

Tesco Plc (TSCO) agreed to sell most of its Fresh & Easy chain to billionaire Ron Burkle’s Yucaipa investment company, allowing the U.K. grocer to exit the U.S. after a failed six-year foray into the world’s biggest economy.
Yucaipa will acquire more than 150 of Fresh & Easy’s near 200 stores as well as distribution and production facilities, Cheshunt, England-based Tesco said today. Those outlets not included in the transaction will be closed in the coming weeks.
According to SFGate, the Bayview store is CLOSING, but the remaining SF stores appear to be safe.

Troubled youth kicking it 'old skool' at San Fran bistro

From CNN.com,

As a juvenile corrections officer in Southern California, Teresa Goines found it rewarding to work with troubled youth and help them turn their lives around.
The hardest part usually came after their release.
"They'd be super excited, ready to start a new life," she said. "They'd be put in the exact same environment, though, so they'd reoffend, and they'd come back."
Sometimes, Goines said, they would call and say they wanted to come back.

The First Cottage Food Producer in San Francisco

Earl Shaddix of Earl's Bread
Earl Shaddix' motto is, "Ready! Fire! Aim!"  Maybe that's one of the reasons why he's the first person in the City to have been approved as an at-home food producer of "low-risk foods" under state's new Cottage Food Law program.    The law, which went into effect on January 1 of this year, allows people to legally sell foods that they have produced in their home kitchens.   For a small investment on the part of the producer, they can see if they have what it takes to make money from a food product that their families love and their friends have said they should market.  As Earl says, "there's nothing like the real public to see just how good your food is."  Without the new law, Earl says he never would have been able to begin selling Earl's Bread beyond his circle of friends and family.  However, with an initial outlay of about $250 and guidance provided by SFDPH, Earl went through safe food handling certification and now produces upwards of 30 loaves of bread for sale each week in the kitchen of his one-bedroom Bayview apartment.

Shaddix has been a professional chef, restaurant owner and manager, farmer, and forager.  He is currently an area supervisor for All Clad Cookware, but actually using his cookware is still a passion.  Earl got his start in the kitchen at an early age.  "Growing up on a ranch in Livermore, I was terrified of the larger animals.  I quickly found that my mother appreciated help in the kitchen, so I was able to get my chores reassigned to kitchen duty.  I was never really interested in baking until later in life when I worked for Il Fornaio.  There, I began to understand better the importance of good bread, what it looks like, tastes like, and the culture behind it."  And no, he's not talking about the cultures of yeast living in his sourdough starter, but rather the culture of sharing that he sees behind every loaf of bread.

As the first person to have gone through the cottage food law process, he feels that he has a responsibility to help others through it.  Two weeks ago, Earl was joined by SFDPH at an event in the Bayview that aimed to do just that.  50 people attended the seminar and learned from Earl how he got his business off the ground under the new law.  But Earl's culture of sharing doesn't stop there.  He also believes that everyone should make their own bread at home - obviously cutting into his own business' bottom line in the process - so he happily shares his sourdough starter with anyone who wants some.

Like many boutique food producers, Earl is passionate about where his product's ingredients come from.  He puts four basic ingredients into his bread: flour, water, salt, and his time.  Of these ingredients, flour has been the most challenging for him to source.  After doing a lot of research, whenever he needs to restock, he now drives to Petaluma to get 300-400 pounds of what he considers to be the best locally grown, heritage varietal, fresh-milled organic flour available.  As for his time, "it's the most expensive part of bread making, but because I love doing it, and it doesn't really consume me, my time is not part of the price."

Earl's Bread
Of the 30 loaves Earl makes each week, he delivers 12 or so to neighbors in the 94124 ZIP code every Sunday.  For those subscribers who don't live in the Bayview, Earl also brings 8-12 loaves to work in Union Square each week.  And for those who can't do that either, Earl can drop your loaf off at All Good Pizza for you to pick up. With the proceeds from his $5/loaf bread sales, Earl has given back to the community already in the form of donations to local causes he cares about.  He's also bought a beehive, and hopes to be able to include a special gift of a jar of honey for his subscribers later this fall.

Earl says, "Earl's Bread was really just started for fun, but in the back of my head, I am thinking of one day opening a small bakery in the Bayview.  We desperately need one, but if someone opened one up before me, I would support them 100%, and may even stop baking my bread altogether."

If you'd like to become a subscriber, visit Earl's Bread on Facebook and sign up.  If you want to find out more about the Cottage Food Law and how Earl got his start, he is planning to participate in another seminar soon, and can provide you information on that as well.
