On September 16th at 6:00 AM, a task force from Bayview Station conducted an operation to “sell stolen metals” to local Junk Dealers in the Bayview District. This task force was put together to combat local junk dealers from buying stolen copper and other metals and contributing to the numerous metal thefts and burglaries in the district.

PG&E alone has documented over 35 incidents in the past 6 months of the theft of underground vault utility copper, which the thieves access through manhole covers. DPW experiences stolen manhole covers and backflow preventers. Samples and photos of all of the above have been given to all the junk dealers and metal recyclers in the area so that they can detect stolen property and not purchase it, yet some persist.

The task force made three arrests involving the purchase of stolen metal at a recycling center in the area of Indiana and 20th. All the metal that the undercover Officers “sold” to the suspects was clearly marked as the property of either PG&E or DPW. It was still purchased regardless of the information provided to the center ahead of time which identified stolen property. All three suspects were booked on stolen property charges, permit violations, municipal, and Business and Professions code violations. (SFPD Case No. 110745768)
**************** On September 16th at 9:00 PM, Officers in the area of Hawes and Revere noticed a subject walking in the middle of the roadway. She was booked at Bayview Station.

They located a victim, bleeding from the head and immediately provided medical treatment for him. They also detained three suspects who were determined to have assaulted the victim and his friend.

Apparently, the argument started because the victim was standing behind the suspects’ vehicle and not allowing them to back out. Words were exchanged then the suspects got out of the car and assaulted the victim. One of the suspects hit the victim several times in the head with a flashlight while another smashed a bottle over his head. The third suspect brandished a knife. A friend of the victim tried to step in and got punched in the head by the first suspect. A security guard, who witnessed the incident attempted to get involved as well and was also attacked by two of the suspects who punched him several times. All three suspects were positively identified and arrested.

The scene was secured and all evidence, including the flashlight used to hit the victim, was recovered and secured. A search of the suspects’ vehicle was done by an Inspector who responded to the scene. He located a Colt pistol concealed within a beanie cap between the drivers seat and center console. The gun had the serial number scratched off. All three suspects were booked on multiple charges including weapons violations. The victims were treated for their non- life threatening injuries and released from the hospital. (SFPD Case No. 110752616)
