LESSONS TO BE LEARNED BY SUSPECTED CRIMINALS:

Lesson #1: if you are wanted on a no bail arrest warrant for rape from the East Bay do not make amorous entreaties to a uniformed on duty San Francisco police officer. The officer called in the man’s name and found out he was wanted and he was taken to jail.

Lesson #2: from an incident this morning around 5:00am at the Dogpatch Saloon at 2496 3rd Street. Don’t try to hide from the police by wrapping yourself in chicken wire after burglarizing a saloon! And don’t tell the police that your partner in crime did a poor job as a lookout!

Incidents of Interest:

On January 17th at 10:30 am, a Bayview resident left his home on the 2100 block of Revere St. to run an errand. He left his home secure except for a bathroom window that was left cracked open. When he returned to his home, he saw two subjects walking out of his front door. One of the subjects was carrying the victim’s backpack which appeared stuffed. The victim confronted the burglar with the bag. The suspect told him that he had a gun and the victims ID card in his possession. He told the victim that he would hurt him if he called the police. The victim was never shown a gun and never spoke to the second suspect. Both suspects then fled on foot east on Revere St.

The victim did not report the crime until 5:30 pm out of fear of retaliation. When officers responded to the scene, they found that the bathroom window screen had been cut and the window had been slid open. The victim stated that although the house did not appear ransacked, his laptop and ID card were in fact missing from the bedroom along with the backpack he saw the suspect carrying. The officers searched the area for any possible suspects but could not locate any that evening. This incident is under investigation. (SFPD Case No. 120046879)

Bayview Officers Arrest Thugs in Robbery on Municipal Railway Vehicle— Loaded Gun Recovered--- Details Below.

Incidents of Interest:

On December 14th at 7:00 pm, officers responded to the 100 block of Atoll regarding a call of a theft of a firearm. They met with the victim who told them that her personal handgun had been stolen from her home several days ago and that she had just been able to get her 11 year old son to explain what happened. The officers talked to both parent and child and learned that the boy was looking out their apartment window while holding the box containing the firearm. During this time, a 12 year old subject that the victim’s son knew was a neighbor walked by the house and noticed the boy in the window. The subject asked to see what was in the box and the victim’s son complied, showing the other boy the gun. Suddenly the subject’s 17 year old brother, who was also a neighbor, came around the corner and snatched the handgun. He then ran off on foot.

The officers were familiar with both subjects and knew where they lived. They responded to their house but neither subject was home at the time. A search of the home was conducted with the permission of the boys’ father, but no gun was located. The officers searched the area and found both subjects walking about a block away. They were detained and transported to Bayview Station pending an investigation. The 17 year old admitted taking the gun, but stated that he in turn gave it to someone else who he identified to the officers. He was booked on theft charges at the Juvenile Justice Center. His 12 year old brother was released to the custody of his mother. An investigation into the whereabouts of the gun is ongoing. (SFPD Case No. 111000569)

On December 5th at 6:50 pm, officers responded to a call of a robbery that occurred on the MUNI T-Line in the area of 3rd and Key. Arriving officers located the 27 year old victim who told them that he was seated on the bus and was listening to music on his iPhone when he was approached by two suspects. The first punched him in the face several times and demanded his phone. The second suspect then punched the victim as well and one of them grabbed the phone away from him. The suspects got off the bus at 3rd and Key and fled on foot. The victim suffered an injury to his eye as a result of the incident for which he was treated at the scene by medics.

The officers were able to locate a witness to the incident who corroborated the victim’s story, adding that there were actually a total of four suspects who got off the bus together and fled. The officers obtained descriptions of all the suspects involved and searched the area but could not locate them that evening. The surveillance footage from the MUNI coach that may have captured the incident is still pending. This incident is under investigation. (SFPD Case No. 110975959)

Bayview District Weekend Recap

On November 20th at 2:30 pm, officers responded to a house on the 1200 block of Palou regarding a possible burglary. They observed that one of the panels to the front door was damaged and appeared forcefully removed. They also found clothing scattered about the living room floor. The owner of the building advised the officers that her tenants were in the process of moving and did not believe anything was taken from the home, as it looked to her as it did earlier when she checked the premise on November 16th. She stated that the damage to the door was possibly vandalism to the property. This incident is under investigation. (SFPD Case No. 110933123)

Bayview SFPD Midweek Recap

On November 12th at noon, a resident in the area of DeHaro and 18th left his bicycle in his garage. Also in his garage was an unlocked car with a video camera and binoculars inside. When he returned to his garage at noon the following day, he found that the bicycle was stolen along with the items inside the vehicle. Although his garage door was still secure, he noticed that the rear door leading from the garage to the backyard had been left unlocked. The responding officers did not find any damage to the door or vehicle. This incident is under investigation. (SFPD Case No. 1109189993)

It's not that scary!

I was just informed that after reading three month's worth of police reports on my blog, someone was beginning to think that the Bayview wasn't such a happy place.  I was also told that my blog is way serious.  I need to fix that, pronto!

Remember, the Bayview Station and the police newsletter covers a lot of ground, from Potrero Hill down through the Bayview and into Visitacion Valley and the Portola, so given that their district covers the most ground of any police station in the city, there's bound to be some activity to report.

Still, I wanted to pass along some numbers that we all received at the last Bayview Police Captain's meeting that I hope will bring some ease to those who think the Southeast part of the city isn't at least moving in the right direction:

Police have made the removal of guns from the streets their top priority in recent years, which is perhaps one reason why there has been a 20% decline in major crimes between 2010 and 2011.  This includes declines of 35% in homicides; 22% in aggravated assaults; 38% in arson; 30% in burglary; 34% in theft; 23% in auto theft; and 39% in robbery. Lesser crimes have also declined by about 24% over the past year.

From there, let's do a head-to-head-to-head between Castro (94114), Marina (94123), and Bayview (94124) crime stats for the last 30-days:

If I was looking just at the numbers, I'd say the Castro is far more dangerous than the Bayview, yet the Bayview has this image problem that it is such a 'high crime' neighborhood, while the Castro is 'vibrant'.

Incidents of Interest:

On November 2nd at noon, Bayview housing officers were on patrol in the area of Ingalls and Palou when they observed a moped, with two helmetless passengers, drive straight through a stop sign in the area. The officers immediately affected a traffic stop and as soon as they activated their lights, the moped pulled over and both subjects jumped off with their hands in the air. The officers observed that the moped’s ignition had been tampered with and had their suspicions confirmed when a record check revealed that the moped was stolen. The suspects, both juveniles aged 16 and 17, were arrested. One of the suspects was on juvenile probation and was booked while the other was cited and released to a parent. (SFPD Case No. 110799630)

Bayview District Mid-Week Recap

On October 30th at 10:00 pm, officers responded to a home in the area of Mansell and Hamilton regarding an assault. They met with the 51 year old victim who stated that she rented a room from the 65 year old suspect. The victim stated that the suspect had been acting strangely for the last few days and that it had come to a head that night. The victim told the officers that the she offered the suspect some food and he suddenly became enraged and ran into the kitchen where began to throw things around. The victim asked him what was wrong and he abruptly turned to her while holding a large kitchen knife. He lunged at the victim, threatened to kill her, and narrowly missed stabbing her in the stomach before running from the house. The victim followed and saw the suspect drop the knife on Olmstead Street as he ran toward the park. The officers searched the area and located the suspect, who was positively identified. They also located and seized the knife that the suspect used to attack the victim. He was booked at Bayview Station for assault, threats, and an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Bayview Officers Continue to Remove Multiple Firearms From the Streets of the Bayview District!

In October of 2011 (so far) Bayview officers have confiscated fourteen (14) firearms from the streets with ten (10) arrests. Most of the arrests have been made with individuals who have prior felony convictions. Not surprisingly, th e3rd Street corridor and environs Hudson to Williams is the most prevalent area of firearms. In just the last week we have retrieved eight (8) firearms.

On October 28th, officers responded to a home on the 2000 block of 19th St. regarding a burglary. They spoke with the victim who told them that someone had broken into her home while she, her boyfriend, and child were asleep. She went on to say that at about midnight she had placed her laptop computer on a dresser a few feet from her bed and went to sleep. When she awoke at 7:00 AM, she found that the laptop and the iPhone that was next to it were both gone. A search of the residence revealed that the downstairs bathroom window, above the toilet was ajar and there was a shoe print on the toilet seat. The victim stated that that window might have been left unlocked, as it did not appear to have been forced open. Crime Scene Investigations came out to further collect evidence from the scene. This incident is under investigation. (SFPD Case No. 110869465)

Gun Tally Continues to Grow:  Bayview Police Station officers have been encouraged to make the confiscation of firearms with arrests their highest priority. In the last week another five (5) guns have been recovered with multiple arrests. In Monday’s crime newsletter we will have a special report on the multitude of gun arrests in the Bayview District.

Incidents of Interest:
On October 25th at 5:45 pm, a 67 year old victim drove a friend home to the area of Oakdale and Ingalls in a white Ford Crown Victoria that he had borrowed from another friend. After dropping her off and seeing her into the house, the victim noticed three suspects standing in the area. One of the suspects approached the victim in the driver’s seat, pointed a gun at him and told him to “give it up”. The victim took that to mean the car and swiftly exited the vehicle. All three suspects then got in and drove off. The victim did not immediately report the crime as he wanted to contact the owner of the vehicle first to obtain its plate information. Officers searched the district for the vehicle and suspects but were unable to locate them that afternoon. This incident is under investigation. (SFPD Case No. 110862572)

After weeks of surveillance and information gathering, Bayview Plainclothes Officers were able to obtain a search warrant for the person, home, and vehicle of an individual believed to be dealing in drugs. On October 20th at 6:20 pm, they executed this search warrant. The team of officers responded to the suspect’s home on the 1500 block of Thomas. After a short while, they observed the suspect leave his home and get into his car which was driven from the scene. Housing officers stopped the car without incident and notified the suspect of the search. The officers were able to obtain the suspects house keys from his pockets and entered his residence.

Once inside, the officers came across two locked doors that they forced open. They found an additional suspect inside one of the rooms along with cocaine powder in plain view along with a digital scale, and packaging material. Also found was a BB gun and behind the TV stand, and a loaded shotgun. Both suspects were placed under arrest, as it was determined that they shared the bedroom where the narcotics and guns were found. Both were booked at Bayview Station on multiple charges. On October 13th at 2:00 PM, Officers responded to a home in the area of McKinnon and 3rd regarding a subject with a warrant who was refusing to allow the caller and her children to leave the home. Officers arrived and arrested the suspect without incident on confirmation of the warrant. The victim stated that the suspect, whom she was dating, had pointed a gun at her and refused to allow her to leave the home on the previous night. She told officers that the gun was still inside the house and gave them permission to search for the weapon. The .22 caliber handgun was located underneath the mattress of the bed that the suspect had slept in. The suspect was booked on weapons, false imprisonment, and threats among numerous other charges. Incidents of Interest:

On October 9th at 11:00 Pm, Officers responded to the unit block of Augusta regarding a burglary. They immediately detected a gas leak inside the residence. The gas leak was coming from the main gas pipe that was bent as if someone had tried to break it off. The pipe was located next to a small side window of the garage that had been smashed. PG&E were called to secure the leak as the Officers searched the home. No suspect was located. According to the owner, she had left the house secured in the morning and came home to the smell of gas. Nothing in the house appeared to be disturbed. This incident is under investigation. (SFPD Case No. 110815913)

BAYVIEW OFFICERS MAKE OUTSTANDING ARRESTS OF ROBBERY AND SHOOTING SUSPECTS!

Officer Sue Lavin of Bayview Police Station has been chosen as Bayview Officer of the Month. She has been a stalwart member of our station who specializes in handling quality of life issues such as homeless encampments. Please congratulate Officer Lavin when you see her out and about!

Sergeant Chuck Collins is the liaison sergeant to Bayview Hunters Point YMCA, the Bay Park Business Condominiums and the Potrero Hill Dogpatch Merchants’ Association.
On October 8th at 8:00 PM, a 17 year old resident of a home on the 100 block of Cameron was home alone with a nine year old and decided to leave the back door open for fresh air. At some point, seven (7) subjects (some of whom the teenage resident knew from the neighborhood) walked into the house. They walked into the living room and began to play video games on the families PS3 console. The teenage victim tried to get them to leave the house but they refused and after about a half an hour, the argument escalated and one of the subjects grabbed a knife from the kitchen and attacked the victim, causing defensive cuts to her hand.

New Lieutenant and Sergeants Arrive At Bayview Station Next Week.

On Tuesday, October 11, 2011 newly promoted Lieutenant David Johnson, formerly of the SFPD Airport Bureau will arrive at Bayview Station. Lt. Johnson will work the night shift.

Also on Tuesday new Sergeants William O’Brien, Anthony Montoya, Justin Erb, Sean Griffin and Daniel Laval will start work at Bayview Station. All five Sergeants will be assigned to our Station Investigative Team to follow up on robbery, burglary and other reported crimes. We welcome the new officers to serve the Bayview community.

OPERATION GUN STOP

In an ongoing effort to combat gun violence, the SFPD and SAFE have renewed the Operation Gun Stop program to get illegally possessed guns and assault weapons off San Francisco’s streets. The program offers rewards UP TO $1,000.00 per incident for information leading to arrests for firearm offenses, as well as the seizure of assault weapon(s), regardless of an arrest.

Incidents of Interest:

On October 4th at 1:00 PM, a vehicle in the area of Shelby and Evans was burglarized. The victim was in his work truck when he left the vehicle parked to check on an account. On returning to the car, he observed a suspect leaning into the backseat of the vehicle and removing the laptop that was there. The suspect fled on foot and the victim left the scene to report the incident. Officers searched the area for the suspect but were unable to locate him that day. This incident is under investigation. Homicide in Bayview District on Friday Night—See below:

On October 1st at 10:00 PM, Officers responded to a “shot spotter” activation along with a call of a shooting victim inside a liquor store on the 1400 block of Thomas. They got on scene and located a 22 year old male victim who was conscious and breathing on the floor inside the store. He had sustained two bullet wounds to his upper body. The victim was immediately rendered aid then transported to SFGH where sadly he succumbed to his injuries and passed.

According to witnesses, the victim had been shot outside before running into the store. Multiple witnesses heard the shooting then saw a suspect run away from the scene toward a white minivan. The Officers secured the scene and all evidence including surveillance video from the store. This incident is being investigated by the homicide detail. (SFPD Case No. 110793234)

BAYVIEW OFFICERS ARREST THREE SUSPECTS LAST NIGHT WITH LOADED FIREARMS AT 3RD AND WILLIAMS. One suspect has previous firearm conviction. Details below.

Incidents of Interest:

On September 29th at 9:12 PM, Officers responded to a “shot spotter” activation in the area of 3rd and Revere. The “shot spotter system is a group of receiver dishes secured strategically around the district. They pick up the sound of gunshots and accurately pinpoint their location of origin. This information is then broadcasted to units in the area.

Officers arriving at 3rd and Revere immediately located a 22 year old male victim, laying in the street with gunshot wounds to his buttocks and legs. He was conscious and was able to speak to the Officers while they rendered medical assistance until the paramedics came on scene. He was transported to SFGH where he is expected to recover.

Officers found that the shooting occurred on the 1500 block of Revere and secured both scenes as well as all evidence and witness statements. This incident is being investigated by the Gang Task Force. (SFPD Case No. 110786994)

CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE:

On September 25th at 4:30 AM, Officers patrolling the area of Bayshore and Marin saw a vehicle drifting from its lane marker and then veering back into the lane. The vehicle swerved and suddenly crossed three lanes of traffic abruptly. The Officers pulled the car over and contacted the driver who had red watery eyes and slurred speech. He told that Officers that he did not drink, yet he had a very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath.
They performed field sobriety tests on the subject, who failed them all, and placed him under arrest. A breath test was conducted with the subject’s breath alcohol level being captured at .101%, well above the legal limit of .08%. He was booked at Bayview station for driving while under the influence of alcohol. (SFPD Case No. 110772432)

Bayview Police Weekend Re-Cap

On September 23rd at 12:25 PM, a resident was inside his home with his wife on the 500 blockof Missouri. The front door was propped open as the day was warm and they wanted air circulation. Suddenly, from their living room, they looked up to see a shirtless subject reaching across the threshold of the front door to grab a computer attaché case that was near the entrance. The suspect snatched it and took off running with the victim in pursuit. His wife called the police who also responded.

The victim chased the suspect on Missouri all the way to Sierra St. At that point the suspect slowed and the victim ordered him to drop the bag. The suspect dropped it and continued on as the victim picked up the bag, all computer and accessory items intact, and began for home.

Meanwhile, Officers were looking for the suspect and saw a subject that matched the broadcasted description, still shirtless, walking in the area of 22nd and Pennsylvania. They conducted a cold show with the victim who positively identified him as the intruder who stole his computer and who he chased down. The suspect was placed under arrest and booked at Bayview Station. An investigation into his possible involvement in the similar hot prowl burglaries in the area is ongoing.
