Bayshore Blvd Road Diet Nears Completion

SFMTA is completing the Bayshore Blvd road diet, so if you're driving between Paul and Boutwell (north of Silver), you'll notice it's permanently down to one lane in each direction for cars, with new, safer left turn pockets at busy intersections. Yesterday I rode the new bike lane they've also added and it's super-comfy and makes it even easier than ever to get from Visitacion Valley to downtown by bike.

Important bicycle updates for District 10

Here are some exciting and important bicycle updates for District 10!

Cesar Chavez Separated Bike Lanes - Highway 101 to Interstate 280.  The project for separated bike lanes on Cesar Chavez between 101 and 280 that was delayed in 2011 is finishing approvals and striping will start this month! Parking removal on Cesar Chavez was legislated by the MTA Board in 2011 and the SFMTA Public Hearing Officer just approved an intersection design (the 4-lane option, see attachment) for the busy Evans intersection.  Together these legislated changes will clear the way for a continuous separated bikeway on Cesar Chavez from 101 to 280, great for families who want to bike to and from the Bayview and Dogpatch, workers biking to Caltrans, and many people biking to work on Cesar Chavez.  The SF Bicycle Coalition has gone door-to-door to all 40 businesses on Cesar Chavez in 2011 to alert people of the community meetings and some sent in support letters for these recent changes.  The SFMTA will be striping the bike lanes starting in a few weeks, and will complete restriping of the Evans intersection in April-May, and will be adding physical barriers (soft-hit posts) and some green pavement at a few intersections in May-June 2012. 

Cargo Way - Thanks to the dedicated work of the SF Port, a new two-way separated bikeway is going in the ground on Cargo Way between Third Street and Jennings Street!  The southeastern waterfront and Heron’s Head Park will soon be much easier to get to by bike.  This design will be protected from traffic on Cargo Way and we'll keep you posted with images as construction moves forward. 

Bayshore Boulevard - After months of delay, new bike lanes are also going in the ground on Bayshore Boulevard/Loomis Street between Marin Street and Silver Avenue.  These bike lanes were part of the 2009 Bike Plan and have over a decade of community outreach.  The restriping should take place in the next 2-4 weeks and we are planning on going door-to-door to all the businesses on the route to alert them again of the upcoming changes.
