Incidents of Interest
On April 27th at 11:25 AM, Officers Singh and Padmore were on the MUNI light rail platform at 3rd and Williams conducting fare inspections. Fare evasion on MUNI is a big problem so officers conduct this type of operation frequently at various stops. As people get off the bus, the officers ask for a transfer, pass, receipt, etc. In the very least, fare evaders become identified and cited. However, officers never really know what’s coming their way in any situation, therefore nothing is ever routine, as we are about to find out:
So anyway....there were the two officers, one in front and one at the rear of the light rail vehicle, waiting for the passengers to disembark the train as it comes to a stop. Officer Padmore began asking the passengers for proof of payment and all was going great until one particular subject got off the train. As soon as the officer asked for his receipt, the suspect did a 180 and got right back on, only to try to sneak back off through another door. Officer Singh noticed this, approached the suspect and asked him to have a seat on the bench as he explained the reason for the detention. Mid sentence, the suspect got up and began to walk away from the officer. Officer Singh grabbed him by the arm but the suspect pulled away and in taking off running, ran right into Officer Padmore who was coming to assist. The fight was on! In the struggle that ultimately led them all to the ground, the suspect’s jacket flew open and revealed the reason for all the resisting: The unmistakable handle of a handgun tucked into the suspect’s waistband. For any officer, this is pretty scary as suddenly the pressure to gain control over the suspect is cranked way up. These are Bayview cops though and we can all predict how this ends:
Fortunately, both officers were able to subdue the flailing suspect long enough for one of the officers to grab the weapon away and manage to hold on to it and maintain control of this guy until back up arrived (which here in the Bayview never takes long). The suspect was arrested and transported to Bayview Station along with the fully loaded .22 caliber revolver that the officers seized. He was booked for numerous charges. The weapon is being investigated for possible connection to any other crime.

On April 27th at 12:15 AM, Officers Schaffer and Valdez were on patrol in the area of Hudson and Ingalls when they were flagged down by a frantic male victim who told them that he had just been robbed by two men. The officers, figuring they could get the story while in the process of searching for the suspect, had the victim jump in the back of the cruiser and began their search.
As they drove, the victim explained that he was walking on Hudson toward the bus stop when the two suspects ran up to him and demanded his money and jewelry. Frightened and afraid for his life, the victim raised his hands and allowed the suspects to riffle through his pockets, taking his cell phone, wallet, and clipper card. They then took off west on Hudson, leaving the victim uninjured but extremely shaken.
Luckily the officers happened to be in the proximity of the incident and found the victim fairly quickly after it occurred. They drove in the general direction of the suspects’ escape route and in approaching Whitney Young Circle, saw two subjects walking on the edge of the park. The victim who was seated in the backseat cried “that’s them!” and the officers immediately flew into action.
Both cops got out of the car and ran up to the individuals, identifying themselves in the process and ordering the suspects to stop. No such luck. One suspect took off into the darkness of the park while the other chose to run down Whitney Young. The officers took off after him and went on a lengthy foot chase that went from Whitney Young to Harbor to Ardath Court. Here the suspect made an attempt to jump over a fence. That was not to be. Officer Schaffer, in one swift lunge, grabbed hold of the suspect. Though the suspect resisted their efforts, the officers were able to subdue him and take him into custody. The suspect had a clipper card in his pocket that on a computer check, showed as registered to the victim.
Other officers responded to the scene to look for the one that got away, but could not locate him that night. It is only a matter of time though with the Bayview Investigative Team on the case. The suspect that they apprehended was interviewed and later booked for multiple robbery and conspiracy related charges at Bayview Station.

On April 29th at 9:30 AM, Bayview Units responded to a call of an altercation involving a gun in the area of 3rd and Palou. The incident had been called in by a MUNI driver who had witnessed the scene as he drove by. The officers searching the area located two female victims at Keith and Quesada. The victims stated that an acquaintance of theirs had brandished a gun at them and that it all began..... with a bump.
Apparently, the two victims were standing in front of a store on the 4800 block of 3rd St. The suspect bumped into one of the victims as she walked past them. This caused the one that was bumped to become angry and ultimately resulted in a yelling match between the three. The sudden escalation came when the suspect suddenly withdrew a gun from her bag and pointed it at the two victims, threatening that this was going to be their last day.
While bystanders took off at the sight of the gun, described as a dark colored revolver, one of the victims retaliated by pulling out a canister of pepper spray and spraying the suspect in the face. This effectively ended the altercation, causing the suspect to flee the scene.
Officers Pashby, Martinez and Correa, while looking for the suspect, were tipped off by a witness that the victim may have run into the market on the same block. They walked into the market and saw a suspect who matched the description given in the rear of the store. She had teary, swollen eyes and was salivating (typical “just been pepper sprayed” look). She was also dripping with milk that the store owner later confirmed he gave her to rinse her eyes with when she ran in.
When the officers approached her, she ran out of their line of sight and as they rounded a corner in pursuit, they found her shuffling away from a garbage can saying that she “didn’t have anything”. That was kind of true, as at that very moment, the “anything” (which happened to be a loaded revolver) was inside the garbage can. As Officer Pashby lifted the lid on the can, the suspect interjected, declaring that whatever was in the garbage was her grandmother’s stuff..... Really? Blaming it on grandma? For shame!
The suspect was positively identified and so was the firearm. She was placed under arrest and after being treated for her exposure to the pepper spray, was booked at Bayview station.

On April 28th at 10PM, Sgt. Hagan and Sgt. Dorgan were working Bayview’s Violent Crime Suppression detail when they got a “heads up” from a fellow police officer in a neighboring district that they had gathered some intelligence regarding a Bayview resident who was in possession of a gun, violating his court ordered probation.
The Sergeants verified the suspect’s probation status and confirmed that he was prohibited from being in possession of any weapons. He also had an active search condition of his person and home, which the officers decided to exercise that very night.
A bit of research led them to a current address for the suspect on the unit block of Westbrook. They responded to the address along with Officers Rightmire and Mora and a photo of the suspect. They were in luck. He happened to be standing right outside of his house. He confirmed his name and probation status.
The search was conducted of the suspect’s home. The first thing they found was a box full of .30 caliber carbine bullets and another bag containing .38 caliber rounds in the suspect’s bedroom closet. They were getting warm..... a search of a backpack in the bedroom followed and BINGO! There was the .38 caliber pistol.
The suspect was placed under arrest and booked at Bayview Station. (SFPD Case No.110346009)
On May 1st at 3:17 AM, Bayview Officers responded to call of shots fired on the 100 block of Dakota. When they arrived, they found a vehicle with a shattered window and as they continued to search, were notified of a gunshot victim “walk in” at SFGH.
Officers met with the 30 year old male victim at the hospital who told them that he was sitting in a car on Dakota when he heard gunshots. He got out of the car and began to run during which time he sustained a gun shot wound to his upper back. On realizing he was injured, he called his wife and ran to her location on Oakdale. She then drove him to the hospital where he was treated and remained in stable condition. This incident is being investigated by the Gang Task Force. (SFPD Case No. 110352012)
