On Tuesday, AT&T Representatives unveiled significant network upgrades in San Francisco’s Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood, taking reporters on a tour of the new technology enhancements and detailing plans for further investment in improving communications in the Bay Area.
“We’re investing in our Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood network because we’re committed to providing best-in-class wireless voice and data service to our customers.” said AT&T’s President of California, Ken McNeely. “AT&T has invested nearly $775 million in its San Francisco area wireless and wireline networks in recent years, and will continue to make improvements to critical communities like the Bayview and throughout the Bay Area.”
The new network enhancements are anchored by a recently upgraded cell site near the intersection of 3rd Street and Arthur Avenue to provide Bayview-Hunters Point with enhanced mobile broadband coverage. AT&T compared the new technology to adding more lanes on a freeway so that voice and data traffic flows faster and more efficiently. The Company believes these improvements will result in significantly better coverage for Bayview-Hunters Point residential and business customers.
AT&T has a history of investing in the Bayview-Hunters Point, not just through its network, but also through partnerships with local community organizations. Lena Miller is the founder of Hunters Point Family, a non-profit supported by AT&T that works with high-risk youth in the neighborhood.
“AT&T is investing in not only the infrastructure for its broadband network in Bayview-Hunters Point, it is also investing in the social and economic infrastructure by supporting training and workforce development for young adults through the Hunters Point Family agency,” said Lena Miller, a lifelong resident of the Bayview-Hunters Point.
AT&T also donates cell phones and cell service to the “Community Ambassador” program, which provides safety escorts dressed in bright yellow vests to walk people from bus stops to work, home, or other locations whenever they feel unsafe.
“At AT&T, we are committed to making a real difference in the communities where we live and work, especially by supporting proven programs that fill community needs,” said Tedi Vriheas, AT&T External Affairs Manager.
