In July 2011, the Postal Service announced that it would study the potential consolidation of more than 3,700 locations across the country. Included in that study were approximately 600 postal station and branch offices, which are satellite facilities of larger Post Offices and generally located in urban and suburban areas.
That said, any proposals to close these facilities have been placed on hold and will not close at this time. Going forward, the Postal Service will evaluate how best to incorporate them into long-term plans for effective and efficient retail service.
With this in mind, the five offices in the 8th district that were subject for review— McLaren, Visitacion, Bayview, the Civic Center, and downtown Federal building— will remain open for the time being.
