Math Tutors Needed for Low Income Public Elementary School

Malcolm X Academy is a public elementary school in the Bayview Hunters Point district of San Francisco, roughly three miles from the UCSF Mission Bay campus.  Many Malcolm X students live in low income, educationally disadvantaged circumstances.  They have a significant need for individual attention to help them reach their potential.

Tzu Chi, a Buddhist community service organization, has created a “Happy Campus” tutoring program at Malcolm X in which volunteers work with children one-on-one under the guidance of the school’s teachers to help the students build basic math skills.  By helping the children improve in math, we also hope to enhance their self-esteem and raise their educational aspirations.

Other opportunities include reading assistance and mentoring.  In addition, a few highly proficient students would benefit from math enrichment challenges that add depth to concepts learned in class.

We tutor as a group during the afternoon on Tuesdays from 2:30 to 4:30 and Thursdays from 1:30 to 4:30.  Some of our volunteers work all of these hours, others only an hour or two.   Other days and times are available to suit individual schedules.

Experiencing a child’s excitement when they master a concept and watching their confidence grow are extraordinarily rewarding.  Please consider joining us.  For more information, contact Matt Buchwitz at buchwitz.matt@gmail.com or 650 619 9792.
