Dear Bay Area Newspapers

HEY!!! Over here, in D10!! Yeah, I know you see us cuz I hear you talking about us.

There are 21 candidates in this race, so why are you all (SFBG, Bay Area Reporter, Beyond Chron, and the Chronicle) only talking about five or six of them? Why has only the Examiner actually mentioned ALL of the candidates by name and offered profiles of each of them? Oh, and over at the Potrero View, a very handsome reporter has given us info on the ten candidates who've qualified for city matching funds.

Do your job, media, be responsible, and above all, fair, to help people make up their minds in this confusing election.

  1. The fact of the matter is that there are some candidates that do not have a chance to win. Of the 20 or so people there are only about 5 strong contenders for Supervisor. It would be impractical for the papers to cover every single candidate.

Just look to the Governors race. No one is covering Peter Schurman. wake up, we live in a world where the media has their own agendas and are own interests. They pick and choose who to cover and who to expose but in all fairness there are not going to do a story (good or bad) on someone that is irrelevant.

  2. There are ten candidates qualifying for matching funds, so they could at the very least mention all of them and not overwhelm their readers. Furthermore, if a candidate has raised all their campaign cash from within the district, I'd hardly call them irrelevant. Rather, I'd call them candidates to watch out for.

  3. Amazing that you mention the View. Moss states that only he and Tran are being profiled because of his money.

Please leave the View out of it, he won't print any candidates rebuttals and asks for a paid ad so the money can go into his pocket, please stop promoting him Chris.

  4. Just to be clear, I wrote that article in the View with no input from Mr. Moss as to its content.

I agree with anonymous #1. Media simply cannot, repeat: CANNOT! give equal and in-depth coverage to 20 candidates. And if they did, how far will readers go? three? six? then stop? So there would be questions about the order.

But the bigger issue, as far as I see, is to cap the number of candidates, because 20 is beyond ridiculous. The ranked system could put somebody in office that absolutely nobody wants, is not qualified, or doesn't even live in this solar system. Anybody remember Ed Jew? Yeah, he lived on the planet ZoZO when he won.
