Piggybacking off a comment made yesterday, maybe I should have a somewhat daily post of residents' and readers' "Big Ideas of the Day". Let's give it a try - send me your Big Idea of the Day and I'll post it here (with full credit, of course!).
OK, here's my not-quite-as-well-thought-out-as-it-ought-to-be-for-prime-time Big Idea of the Day! I just read about AB1871 being signed into law at SF.Streetblog
Read the article ar SF Streetblog first before commenting!
My idea: Neighborhoods comprising a certain number of households could buy a car or two for the program. Those cars would then get city-designated parking spaces on the street on condition that a certain percentage of the households on the block agree to give up one of their personal cars. Those cars could be new or (preferably) existing vehicles (no older than 10 years) that are currently owned by local residents that would be sold to be used in the program.
As an added incentive to get rid of those extra cars, the city could begin to levy additional taxes on residents who have more than two personal vehicles registered to their address. The added taxes could help neighborhoods fund the purchase of vehicles for the car share program.
OK, let me have it (be nice!).
It is a good idea - but there is already City Car Share, which has all of the details (insurance, car 'check-out', etc) already figured out.
ReplyDeleteWe have cars but use carshare when we need to get folks from the airport or transport something large we purchased off of craigslist!
This isn't really a Big Idea but here goes. I'd like to see a "resign to run" law in SF. If you're in elected office you should stay in office. If you want to run for another elected position, that's fine. But at least resign from the current gig. In the private sector if you don't show up for work your employer considers you to have "abandoned the job" after a few days and lets you go. I can't understand how we allow the Mayor and the DA, et al, to take their show (and police protection) on the road without consequence. Just wondering how a law like that can possibly get into the books. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteAs for the "Daily Big Idea" thing - maybe keep the Big Idea thing idling by creating a stickie posting, just like other forums. That way you can keep it at the top of the list, at least for a while. If/when it loses traction you can dump it.
I don't know about you but I'm sick of seeing trash on the street. Especially big things like mattresses and furniture. Here's my Big Idea. Let's monetize the trash. You buy a sofa in SF and pay a $3 CRV, just like the CRV when you buy a can of soda or a car tire. If anyone takes a used sofa to the dump, we give them $3. Same with mattresses. Furniture, too. We'd have scavengers driving around, looking for this junk like we have pallet and can collectors. If I buy a car tire or a can of soda I never think of the CRV. It's time we stopped wasting our City time and resources and started to get smart.
