The officers at the Bayview Police Station are in the process of planning a new community policing model which they believe will link the officers with the community in a more efficient way to perform problem solving in the various neighborhoods of our district.
Within the next few weeks we will identify all of the community organizations and reach out to the leadership of those organizations to provide a liaison supervisor from the police station to the organizations who want a point of contact. For example, if the Portola Steering committee wants to have such a liaison, a sergeant from Bayview Station will be the link to the Portola group and will be obligated to attend the Portola meetings and be the focal point to resolve community based problems, i.e. graffiti issues, drug house, or any other quality of life issue in that neighborhood.
If you are a leader of a merchant group, residents’ association, non-profit, neighborhood watch or other organization and would like to have a station liaison, please email Paul.Chignell@sfgov.org.
Bayview Station holds community meetings with the Captain on the first Tuesday of each month. They are working on holding these monthly meetings at various locations within the Bayview to help provide access and convenience to all residents who wish to attend.
The next meeting is on Tuesday, July 5th, 6:00 pm BAYVIEW STATION COMMUNITY ROOM 201 Williams Avenue (Cross Street Newhall)
Incidents of Interest:
On June 18th at 2:00 PM, there was a bank robbery at the Bank of America on San Bruno Avenue. The suspect entered the bank and approached a teller window. He asked the teller to give him $2500. The teller, assuming he was making a withdrawal, asked for his ATM and ID. The suspect obviously had different notions. He told her that she was to GIVE him the money or else someone would get hurt. Then he stuck his hand in his jacket, terrifying the teller with the insinuation of having a gun. She gave him the money that she had in her drawer and he left the bank on foot with a total of $1400 in cash.
The officers arrived and immediately began collecting evidence and broadcasting the suspect’s description and direction of flight. He never wore a disguise so the surveillance footage recovered from the bank was able to capture a clear image of the suspect as the crime occurred. This was great because it got Officer Hernandez thinking about the robbery report he had taken just minutes before the bank was robbed. In that incident, the victim was sitting in his running car at San Bruno and Felton when he was approached by a suspect who demanded money and threatened to shoot the victim if he did not comply. The suspect put his hand inside a jacket as if to pull out a gun. The victim didn’t stick around to see what was hidden in the suspect’s jacket as he stepped on the gas and split. The victim was uninjured but gave a great physical and clothing description of the suspect (SFPD Case No. 110490537).
The suspect in this attempted robbery case and that of the bank robbery that occurred about 10 minutes later had an almost identical physical and clothing description. Looking at a the photo of the suspect from the bank’s security camera planted the image of the suspect in Officer Hernandez’s mind. Though they looked high and low, the cops were unable to locate the suspect that day, but it’s a good thing that Officer Hernandez has a VERY sharp memory......
The following morning on June 19th, Officer Hernandez was walking his footbeat on San Bruno Avenue. It’s early, only about 8:30 AM and not too many people are out. His attention is grabbed male suspect walking toward him and something about this guy looked so familiar.....down to the goatee he wore on his chin. Could it possibly be??? He detained the subject and notified Bayview Inspectors Dorgan and Hagen, who immediately responded to his location with a still shot of the suspect from the bank. Bingo.
The suspect was placed under arrest and transported to Bayview where he was interrogated by Bayview Inspectors as well as an agent sent from the FBI. As a result, he was booked not only for the bank robbery, but also for the aforementioned attempted robbery of the motorist. That there’s some great police work! (SFPD Case No. 110490270)

On June 18th at 4:30 PM, Housing Officers Lamma, Rodatos, and Cahill responded to the unit block of Nichols Way regarding a robbery. When they arrived, they found a 12 year old victim hurt and bleeding. After summoning the ambulance, and while providing first aid, this is the story that the boy told the officers:
The boy stated that his mother left home to run a quick errand, leaving him alone. He heard a knock at the door and answered it. A crazed subject pushed his way into the house and shoved the boy to the kitchen and punched him in the mouth. He asked where the boy’s father was and went room to room searching for any other occupants. The suspect went back into the kitchen and shoved the boy against a wall so hard, that it left an indentation in the sheet rock. The suspect wore a ski mask on his head but the brave The suspect grabbed a couple iPads, a cell phone, and money off the kitchen table and ran ut the back door, prior to doing so, slamming the boy against a metal bracket near the door.
Although the child was terrified and hurt, he was clear enough to notice some things about suspect of this home invasion. For one, he sounded like a guy that used to live a few doors down. That old neighbor was about the same height and weight and often wore a gold grill** on his front teeth. As a matter of fact, this suspect wore the exact same grill (which was unique as far as grills go, with fancy pointed fangs). As a matter of fact, this same guy had just showed up at their house the day before, asking to change a $20. After this very brave child identified the house that the suspect used to live in, Officer Lamma (who knows absolutely everyone in the Alice Griffith Housing Development) knew exactly who the suspect was by name.
As all this was going on, the boy’s mother received multiple calls from some neighbors who told her of the robbery and she naturally made haste to get home. She was told who the suspect was (which was a shocker since she had just seen the suspect outside her home when she went to do errands, and even shook hands with him.) Additionally, she was informed that there was a second suspect acting as a lookout outside the home during the incident. He had run into a particular address on the 100 block of Double Rock after the incident. On her arrival, she provided the officers with all this information and they wasted no time in heading over to the house. The officers located the “lookout” suspect inside the home and took him into custody. During his interrogation a Bayview Station, Inspectors Hagan and Dorgan were able to identify and obtain a location for the “home invasion” suspect, who happened to be on felony probation. He was picked up as well and booked at Bayview Station along with his “lookout” on charges including burglary, robbery, conspiracy, aggravated assault, along with and various child abuse charges and of course the probation violation. Approximately a month ago, on May 7th, there was a home invasion robbery on the 3100 block of Ingalls Street. In this incident a young woman was taking a shower when she heard banging coming from the lower level of her home. She wrapped herself in a towel and went to investigate. She was startled to see two men with scarves around their faces and crowbars in their hands standing in her living room. They told her not to yell and ordered her to tell them where the valuables in the house were. The poor victim sat in fear on her couch with nothing but a towel on as the two men ransacked her home and took items of value. Thankfully, they left without injuring her.
Officers arrived within minutes of her 911 call and conducted an investigation. CSI arrived shortly there after and managed to lift a complete fingerprint from the scene.
On June 6th, Inspector Mason received the results that the CSI obtained after processing the print. It was a “hit”, indicating that it belonged to an individual already in the system, in this case, 21 year old Bayview resident.
For Inspector Mason, making the arrest was a breeze. The suspect was already in custody for a similar incident that occurred in the Ingleside District! An investigation into the identity of the second suspect is still pending.

On June 21st at 12:30 PM, Officers Fry, Norment, and Maher were in the area of 3rd and Palou when all of the sudden, several gunshots rang out from the direction of Quesada towards Revere. The officers, counterintuitively, ran toward the sound of gunshots and saw a large frenzied group of male subjects fleeing the area in all directions. The officers put the call out and backup arrived within seconds, trying to round up as many of the subjects as possible to ascertain what happened and to help anyone who may have been hurt. Fortunately, nobody was hit by the gunfire.
The officers detained and identified 14 individuals who were seen leaving the scene, but none had a gun and nobody was talking. One of the suspects had a loaded .25 caliber magazine tucked inside his sock. The gun was somewhere out there and the extremely frustrated cops were not about to leave the area until it was located. Up and down the streets, officers searched every crack and crevice until Officer Thornton, sifting through garbage cans on the sidewalk, located the .25 caliber handgun behind a set of bins on the 1600 block of Revere. With a sigh of relief, the officers arrested and transported the suspect back to the station where a GSR (gunshot residue test) was conducted on his hands, with the results pending. The suspect was booked at Bayview Station. The Gang Task force took over the investigation of the incident. (SFPD Case No.110498597)
-----------
This arrest came on the heels of two separate shootings that occurred just days earlier in the same area. The Gang Task Force is investigating these as well to determine if there are any connections:
On June 15th at 11:11 PM, Bayview officers responded to a liquor store at 3rd and Newcomb regarding a gunshot victim. They located a 27 year old male in the rear of the store, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso, arms, and legs. His transport to SFGH was quickly arranged and he was treated at the hospital for his injuries, that amazingly were not life threatening.
The victim had apparently run into the store from the street as a suspect pursued him, shooting him inside the establishment. Fortunately, the entire incident was captured on video surveillance footage from both inside and outside the store. Officers secured the scene and collected all physical evidence and witness statements. This shooting is still under investigation.

-----------
On June 17th at 8:30 AM, Bayview Officers responded to the area of 3rd and Quint regarding a call of a shooting. They located a truck mid block of 1900 Palou with several windows shot out. The driver, a 34 year old male, was uninjured. His passenger, a 40 year old male had been grazed by a bullet for which he was treated at SFGH.
The driver told the officers that he was driving on the 1800 block of Palou when he heard some gun shots and saw his windshield shatter. He ducked down and continued driving to the next block, where the officers located him and his passenger. The scene was secured and officers secured all evidence and took witness statements. This incident is currently under investigation.
