It's not that scary!

I was just informed that after reading three month's worth of police reports on my blog, someone was beginning to think that the Bayview wasn't such a happy place.  I was also told that my blog is way serious.  I need to fix that, pronto!

Remember, the Bayview Station and the police newsletter covers a lot of ground, from Potrero Hill down through the Bayview and into Visitacion Valley and the Portola, so given that their district covers the most ground of any police station in the city, there's bound to be some activity to report.

Still, I wanted to pass along some numbers that we all received at the last Bayview Police Captain's meeting that I hope will bring some ease to those who think the Southeast part of the city isn't at least moving in the right direction:

Police have made the removal of guns from the streets their top priority in recent years, which is perhaps one reason why there has been a 20% decline in major crimes between 2010 and 2011.  This includes declines of 35% in homicides; 22% in aggravated assaults; 38% in arson; 30% in burglary; 34% in theft; 23% in auto theft; and 39% in robbery. Lesser crimes have also declined by about 24% over the past year.

If ever you're curious about crime stats, go to http://www.crimemapping.com/map/ca/sanfrancisco

From there, let's do a head-to-head-to-head between Castro (94114), Marina (94123), and Bayview (94124) crime stats for the last 30-days:

Crime Type 94114 94123 94124
Arson 0 0 0
Assault 148 38 82
Burglary 85 35 45
Disturbing the Peace 411 154 82
Drug/Alcohol 58 20 16
DUI 17 11 1
Fraud 44 15 22
Homicide 0 0 0
Motor Vehicle Theft 100 44 53
Robbery 59 14 23
Sex Crimes 18 13 5
Theft/Larceny 142 56 44
Vandalism 57 30 32
Vehicle Break-in/Theft 79 45 32
Weapons 47 3 28
Total 1265 478 465

If I was looking just at the numbers, I'd say the Castro is far more dangerous than the Bayview, yet the Bayview has this image problem that it is such a 'high crime' neighborhood, while the Castro is 'vibrant'.

That all said, below is the SFPD's mid-week recap of nefarious events in D10:

*************

On November 3rd between noon and 3 pm, a 55 year old blind resident of the 200 block of Harbor heard a knock at her door. She inquired who it was and was told through the door that it was her cousin. Initially, she thought that she recognized the voice, but after she let the subject into her home she became concerned. The male subject told her that they were going to go to the bank and that she was going to withdraw some cash. At this point, the victim realized that the voice of the subject did not belong to anyone she knew and that he was a stranger. The suspect led her out of the house and into a car, which was driven by the second suspect.

They drove for approximately 10 minutes and walked into a bank that the victim recognized as her branch at 3rd and Evans, when she heard a familiar teller’s voice. The suspects walked up to the teller with her and had her withdraw several hundred dollars. The suspects then took her home and told her not to call the police or they would kill her. The victim waited until the following day to report the incident.

The officers that responded to the scene did a thorough investigation and confirmed with the bank that the victim had in fact come into the branch and withdrew money from her account. The officers were able to obtain video surveillance from the bank which captured the incident. This case is currently under investigation. (SFPD Case No. 110894484)

On November 7th at 6:35 am, a 55 year old victim was waiting for the bus in the area of Silver and Cambridge. She suddenly felt a presence behind her and turned around to get a quick glance at the suspect who immediately sprayed her in the face with pepper spray. The victim brought her hands to her face at which point the suspect grabbed and yanked at the purse she had on her arm. He managed to get the purse and fled to a dark colored car stopped on Silver. The suspect got in and the car drove off toward San Bruno Ave.

The victim was treated by paramedics for the irritation caused by the pepper spray. The officers on scene searched the area for the suspects and vehicle but were unable to locate them that morning. (SFPD Case No. 110898201)

On November 7th at 3:25 pm, officers patrolling in the area of Quesada and Lane recognized a subject standing on the corner who they knew to have an outstanding arrest warrant. They took the suspect into custody without incident. On searching him, they located two baggies of marijuana in his pants. He was booked at Bayview Station. (SFPD Case No. 110877264)

On November 7th at 4:40 pm, officers patrolling the area of LaSalle and 3rd observed a subject drinking a beer in public. When she was finished, she simply threw the can on the ground and continued walking. The officers detained her for littering. A record check revealed that she had active warrants for narcotics totaling in excess of $20,000.00 in bail. She was taken into custody and booked at Bayview Station. (SFPD Case No. 110899898)

On October 7th at 6:15 pm, Bayview housing officers responded to the unit block of Nichols regarding a fight. They arrived to a chaotic scene of 60 to 80 people in the street, either in some way involved or just spectators, while two female subjects were ranting about the broken windows of a vehicle that belonged to one of them. The subjects turned out to be sisters who refused to give any information to the officers other then generally pointing at the crowd and stating that “they” did it.
According to witnesses, this incident was a result of an earlier fight involving the two sisters and another resident who lived a few houses down. The police went to that address and determined that there was a victim there who stated that the two sisters and some friends had come to her home and thrown bleach into her face and clothing. The victim was still in the process of washing the bleach from her eyes and mouth and the officers could smell a strong odor of bleach and saw where it had discolored the victim’s clothing and shoes.

As the officers were sorting it out, the two sisters and a friend of theirs holding a huge frying pan began to advance toward the victim’s home and supporters of this victim trying to meet them head on. Fearing a possible mêlée, the officers disarmed the one subject of her frying pan and arrested both sisters for assaulting the victim with a chemical with the intent to injure her. They were transported them to Bayview Station where both were booked. It is of yet undetermined who broke the windows of the suspects’ car. This incident is still under investigation. (SFPD Case No. 110900439)

Bayview plainclothes officers, after a thorough investigation and doing some surveillance, obtained a judicial search warrant for the home of a methamphetamine dealer on the 5000 block of Mission. The officers responded to the home but found that the subject of the warrant was not there. They did however locate her boyfriend inside the home who in the process of pulling out his ID from his wallet, also inadvertently pulled out a bindle full of methamphetamine from his pocket. He was placed under arrest and booked at Bayview Station.

A systematic search of the home continued. The search revealed additional methamphetamine in the home along with digital scales and packaging equipment. All of the narcotics evidence was seized and a warrant for the suspect who was the subject of the search warrant has been issued. (SFPD Case No. 110900508)

On November 8th at 9:00 am, officers responded to a warehouse on the unit block of Apparel Way regarding a burglary. They met with an employee that stated that two laptops had been stolen from the premise. He went on to say that yesterday he drove a truck into the warehouse and closed the roll down gate. He then set the alarm and left. As he was outside, he heard the alarm go off and went back in to reset it. When he returned to work and found the laptops missing, he reviewed the company’s surveillance footage and found that it showed a suspect sneak into the warehouse just prior to the door rolling down the previous night. The suspect hid in the warehouse until the employee left and then stole the laptops and left through the rear door of the warehouse. The surveillance footage was made available to the responding officers. This incident is under investigation. (SFPD Case No. 110901302)

On November 8th, after 10 days of investigation that originally came from a tip, plainclothes officers were able to obtain the street name and phone number of a Bayview Oxycodone dealer. One of our officers, posing as a client, called the dealer and worked out an amount of money to purchase 30 Oxycodone pills. They agreed on a price and a meeting place and time which was at 25th and Third Street at 7:15 pm. The officers responded to the area to begin surveillance.

The suspect called our undercover “client” officer several times to make sure of his whereabouts and finally pulled up along side his car and got out, leaving his female driver to wait. He was immediately detained by plainclothes officers in the area and was positively identified. He turned out to be on probation with a search condition. The officers searched him and located six individually wrapped baggies of heroin in his pocket. They searched his car and found additional heroin there as well. His female driver admitted to holding the 30 Oxycodone pills that were the object of the original sales agreement and surrendered them to the officers. The suspect was taken into custody and booked at Bayview Station. (SFPD Case No. 110902930)

On November 8th at 11:15 pm, officers on patrol in the area of Revere and Lane saw two suspects that they walking in the area who they recognized. They knew one of the suspects from a previous arrest where two guns were recovered and knew the second suspect to be on current probation with a warrantless search condition. As they drove closer to the suspects, they heard someone in the street whistle loudly (this is a common way of lookouts letting others know that the police are in the area). As both suspects heard the whistle, they turned and saw the patrol car. Immediately, both suspects made a 180 degree turn and began to sprint from the scene as soon as the officers stopped the car and opened their doors to get out.

They ran north on Lane and rounded the corner on Revere and began to run east. The officers lost sight of the two for a moment before getting back in the car and following the suspects, successfully heading them off with the radio car. Both suspects, with nowhere left to run, surrendered. Other units responded to search the suspects’ flight path for any weapons they might have dropped while running. It didn’t take long for officers to find a 9mm semi automatic handgun over a fence about 20 feet from the street. The gun was well within the throwing distance and the suspects’ known path of travel. The gun was collected as evidence. Both suspects were booked at Bayview Station. (SFPD Case No. 110903499)

On November 9th at 2:50 am, a victim stepped out of her home on the 1800 block of 25th St. when she was suddenly attacked from behind by an unknown suspect. The suspect started punching her in the head until she fell to the ground. She was then kicked several times before the suspect ran off east on 25th. The victim could tell that the suspect was female by her voice and insisted that she had had no altercations with anyone that would incite someone to want to hurt her. The victim was treated for her injuries at San Francisco General Hospital. The officers searched the area for the suspect but were unable to locate her that morning. (SFPD Case No. 110903687)
