This particular corner of the city has historically been considered a “food desert” — defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a low-income neighborhood with limited access to "fresh, healthy and affordable food."
Which is precisely what Walgreens hopes to solve with its "Food Oasis” initiative.
“Tackling the issue of healthy food accessibility is key to improving health outcomes in underserved communities,” Bill Hose, Walgreens market vice president for northern California, said in a press release.
According to the USDA, 23.5 million Americans live in a food desert. Residents who lack access to wholesome foods face a higher risk of obesity, diabetes and cancer.
